Sun Life Financial Celebrates Twenty-Five Years of Medical Stop-Loss, Over 2.5 Million Employees Protected

12/17/2007

Wellesley, MA (December 17, 2007) - The U.S. division of Sun Life Financial (NYSE: SLF, TSX:SLF) announced that it is celebrating its twenty-fifth year competing in the Medical Stop-Loss business. Stop-Loss insurance helps protect employers with self-funded health care plans from the serious financial impact that catastrophic health claims can have on their business. Over the past 25 years, the U.S. division of Sun Life has grown to one of the largest providers of Stop-Loss insurance in the United States, with 1,665 self-funded employer plans, covering more than 2.5 million employees.

"We are delighted with the success our Stop-Loss product has enjoyed over the past 25 years," said Christopher Brown, vice president of Stop-Loss Products. "We have experienced tremendous organic growth over the years, and we recently received a considerable boost with the acquisition of the Genworth Employee Benefits Group in June. The acquisition increased our customer base significantly and expanded our distribution network to 34 sales offices nationwide."

During 2007, Sun Life celebrated this milestone with the introduction of several product enhancements. To better serve Stop-Loss customers covered by Genworth Life and Health Insurance Company1 policies, the company enhanced its Terminal Liability benefit and added a new Monthly Aggregate Accommodation benefit. Both options are attractive to smaller employers, who are increasingly self-funding their group medical plans2.

Sun Life also marked the occasion by expanding its SunResources cost-containment program. SunResources links Stop-Loss customers to vendors that have expertise in lowering the cost of health care claims, even before they reach the Stop-Loss deductible. The program targets the most pressing challenges facing employers today including organ transplants, chronic conditions, out-of-network charges, and much more. This year, three new offerings were added to the SunResources program: fraud detection services, a kidney dialysis network, and a congenital heart disease network. These additions, plus SunResources' new, actively managed vendor credentialing process introduced this year, make SunResources the industry-leading program of its kind.

"Self-funding is an effective way for employers to reduce health plan costs without sacrificing high-quality benefits," said Christopher Brown. "We're committed to making self-funding more affordable with enhanced services, strong contract provisions and programs like SunResources. It's this genuine value to customers that has fueled our consistent growth and success over the past 25 years."
