This year, I competed in the Ironman World Championship Triathlon in Kona, Hawaii. In one day, I swam 2.4 miles, biked 112 miles, and then piloted my racing chair 26.2 miles.
While training for the race, my day starts at 5:00 a.m. when I head out to train for two hours before my workday begins. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays are high intensity training days. I ride my handcycle for 25 to 40 miles each morning and swim for one to two hours after work. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, I focus on speed work, pushing 15 to 25 miles in the racing chair.
When Sun Life agreed to sponsor me in my quest to become the next World Champion Ironman, I had no idea what came along with that sponsorship in addition to the financial support.
While the sponsorship helped me with travel and equipment costs, it?s the support from employees around the organization that really motivated me. I received emails from employees from across the globe ? people I?ve never met ? wishing me well. It was a great incentive to push myself and the support motivated me to get up each morning and give it my best.
